Focus Academy

Gobblet Jr. is always a hit with our students. It's a modified tic-tac-toe game that encourages visualization and planning ahead. Gobblet Jr. is good for ages 7-adult.

Four Favorites!

Pentago combines the principles of Connect Four and Chess. This game requires planning ahead and thinking about your opponent's goals. A little more challenging, this game is good for ages 10-adult.
Spot It is a favorite of all of our students. Perfect for a long game or can be played in just a few minutes. Spot It works on numerous vision skills and increases processing speed. There are many different versions of the game and all are great. Good for ages 5-adult.
Stare Jr. is a visual memory game that is fun and challenging. Our students love to play this game and don't even realize the awesome visual memory development that is happening. Good for ages 7-adult.

Quiddler is a fun, short word game that is like playing Scrabble with cards. It works on spelling skills and helps students learn to visualize words.

You can buy Quiddler on www.amazon.com for around $10. Barnes and Noble book stores also sell Quiddler in the games section.

Try out Quiddler online at http://www.setgame.com/quiddler/puzzle - but a word to the wise, the card game is more entertaining than the online version!

Spot It by Blue Orange Games is a quick and fun game that kids and adults love to play. The basic goal of the game is to visually scan a series of cards and find matching symbols. The game includes 5 different variations of how to play. Spot It is appropriate for ages 4 to adult.

It addresses skills, like memory, eye tracking, processing speed and more.

Spot It is available from major retailers for around $10.

There are numerous versions of Spot It available (http://www.blueorangegames.com/index.php/spot-it). We've played Spot It Original, On the Road, Alphabet and Basic English. The Basic English version is perhaps the most challenging, because players can match words to words, pictures to words, and pictures to pictures. Lots of fast thinking is required!

Fun with Convergence and Fine Motor Skills

Picture
A Focus Academy student quickly places straws into the container, while being timed.

This activity is simple to create and fun to play! It helps children with fine motor control (picking up the straws) and convergence skills (pointing the eyes towards the small holes in the container).

Items:
1 - empty and clean parmesan cheese container
6 - straws (colored straws are optional, but fun)

Preparation:
Cut the straws into varying lengths, short and long.

Instructions:
Spread the straws on a tabletop.
The child should pick up the straws (one at a time) and insert into the small holes in the container.

Options:
  • A parent or helper can hold the container, moving it to different places. The child should follow the container with his/her eyes and insert straws.
  • A timer can be used to see how fast the child can get all of the straws into the container.
  • The straws can be replaced with beads and the child can use tweezers to pick up the beads and place into the container.
