Fun with Convergence and Fine Motor Skills

Picture
A Focus Academy student quickly places straws into the container, while being timed.

This activity is simple to create and fun to play! It helps children with fine motor control (picking up the straws) and convergence skills (pointing the eyes towards the small holes in the container).

Items:
1 - empty and clean parmesan cheese container
6 - straws (colored straws are optional, but fun)

Preparation:
Cut the straws into varying lengths, short and long.

Instructions:
Spread the straws on a tabletop.
The child should pick up the straws (one at a time) and insert into the small holes in the container.

Options:
  • A parent or helper can hold the container, moving it to different places. The child should follow the container with his/her eyes and insert straws.
  • A timer can be used to see how fast the child can get all of the straws into the container.
  • The straws can be replaced with beads and the child can use tweezers to pick up the beads and place into the container.
